Student name and the USI
When a USI is created the name entered must match the name on the student’s identification documents. The USI Registry System uses the Document Verification Service (DVS) to check the identity document biographic information matches the original record.
If the identification documents display only a single name for a student, then a USI must be created with that one single name.
If the identification documents display first name and last name, then a USI must be created with both the first name and last name.
International students create their USI using their non-Australian passport and Australian visa, so their USI will reflect their name as it appears on their Australian visa. If the international student’s non-Australian passport has a single name and the Australian visa has duplicated that single name under first and last name or entered ‘no name’ under last name, the USI Registry System will reflect the same.
A student’s USI account details cannot be changed to reflect education or training provider’s record.
If an education or training provider cannot verify a student’s USI, check that the student’s name matches their identification documents. The education or training provider’s Student Management System (SMS) must match the student’s name as it has been recorded in the USI Registry system when attempting to verify a USI. If the SMS does not allow this, please use the organisation portal.
